A zine for the hardcore-obsessed!
Reviews
Chris Boarts Larson, Slug & Lettuce zine:
Clench is a zine that is dedicated to old U.S. hardcore. Each issue has had a theme- the FU's, Void, Agnostic Front, Black Flag, the Fuck Ups, and one issue is letters. I've reviewed each of them as they've been out (or at least the first 6) and I like to see them all together all at once. It's like a big old-school hardcore history lesson. Put this in toe with an old-school mix tape and you're in business. Philip's obsession with music is rabid and this zine is the result. It's cool.
Al Quint, Suburban Voice blog:
Phil Knowles has been publishing his single sheet Clench zine for some years now and it has tiny print and often offers a history/critical assessment of an older band, such as Void, Agnostic Front, the FU's, or Black Flag. Reprints of vintage interviews, photos, and flyers make it interesting although I need my magnifying glass (that's what happens when you get older, sorry to say). Issue #9, however, is a 20-page zine that includes an extensive study of Urban Waste, including an interview with their guitarist, Johnny Waste. There's also an interview with Wendy Eager from Guillotine fanzine and Daniel Skibra of Mad At The World Records, who did an Urban Waste reissue a few years back. This is the best issue he's done.
Joe Lachut, Seven Inches To Freedom zine:
Each issue is a maniacal history by way of interviews, recounts, photos, flyers, and whatever else Phil could dig up. Clench is amped on hardcore/punk and will tell you about it! I hope this zine goes on forever!
